Criminals are getting creative in preying on their victims by targeting a more vulnerable target, senior citizens. In this hard time, no one is spared even the old ones.
Kurukuro warns the public to be aware of a robbery and kidnapping syndicates who victimize on unaccompanied elderly and rich-looking women. Due to age and vulnerability, these suspects on board a van look for old people through a contact. As soon as target has been identified, the syndicate members will approach and befriend the victim. During conversation, the suspects will invite the potential target (in one case the victim was hypnotized) to ride in their van and will insist on bringing her home citing her poor physical condition. Inside the van, the criminals will get all the victim’s valuables and will start to ask about her financial background as well her other family members. After establishing that she has more valuables at home, the suspects will forcibly taker her home to get more valuables.

Perpetrators in the Dark
Kurukuro warns all commuters about taxi drivers who turned out to be robbers/ rapists at night. The report came from after an unidentified taxi driver attacked a woman while on her way home in February. At about 2:00AM, the victim flagged down a cab somewhere in Global City, Taguig and requested to bring her home. Just a few kilometers away from her residence, the taxi driver suddenly stopped and asked her to alight from his cab due to mechanical problem. Helpless, the victim alighted from the cab and flagged down another taxi which was waiting for a passenger. As she neared the street where she lived, the second taxi driver suddenly took a wrong turn. The driver grabbed her neck and began attacking her when she complained about the wrong turn. The woman fought back and escaped from her attacker. Bystanders heard the victim’s cry for help which prompted him to escape.

On Social Media Crimes
After reading all the brouhaha about social networking sites, I am convinced that these sites can compromise the security of an individual.
Be careful of what you post in your social networking accounts. Status updates can lead to burglaries and robberies. There’s one confirmed case (country undisclosed)wherein he tweeted that he was out of town and later on his house was burglarized by unidentified suspects. Police investigation revealed that the perpetrators turned to social media to find their victim.
Announcing to the world your location or you are not home is not wise to put in your account. Criminals identify potential victims on social networks then attack them both at home and place of work. Criminal syndicates use these sites as a vehicle to get more potential targets. Police arrested a male computer technician in Angeles City, Pampanga Province for alleged series of murder. The suspect was Facebook friends with the daughter of one of the alleged victims.
Safety tips:
Avoid over sharing too much information on your account
Should practice location awareness
Adjust website privacy setting. Review privacy and security settings of your account.
Always keep in mind that people aside from your friends can view your account. Let us all practice prudence when posting updates in our respective accounts.
Be selective when adding friends.
