Police checkpoints are meant to cut the movement of criminal syndicates, particularly carnapping and kidnap for ransom gangs, and prevent them for further movement of activities. Checkpoints are usually manned by police, military and civilian components from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police (PNP). Kurukuro warns all readers to be aware that there are some crooked Metro Manila policemen who resort to extortion via police checkpoints to earn extra income to sustain their personal interest.
